Note:
Performance reading today has a totally new meaning. When I was in college it was simply using a song to help in the teaching of reading. You find a song that would be popular with the children. You begin by teaching the song to the children. I would usually end my day with singing the song with the children. Once the children had most of the song down I would introduce the lyrics by using either a chart with the lyrics or an overhead projector. Today, with smartboards and all, it would be a lot easier. To make a long story short, the children pick up the sight words as they learn the song. I would then provide the children with activities associated with the song. The activities could be in any part of the curriculum depending on the song I used. For example, the Garden Song, by Dave Mallet, provided many activities in the science area.
This was just another teaching tool I used in my approach to reading. I happen to play a little guitar and so I got to play for a captive audience on most days. It was fun for all of us in the room.
I'll begin this page with one of my favorite songs, "The Garden Song" by Dave Mallett. This was a great song to do in the springtime.
Have fun with it!!
